If proof were needed that e-tailing is back with vengeance, then look no further than the venerable department store chain John Lewis.
Its website has recently overtaken Peter Jones, its flagship outlet in the fashionable
Many retailers either scaled back or abandoned the internet immediately after the dot com bubble burst when it became more and more apparent just how heavily they depended on scale and a slick supply chain to make any money.
But those that understood how to serve their customers well and had the vision to see how we as consumers like choice but not at the expense of quality are starting to reap the rewards of sticking with e-tailing.
As the John Lewis website stocks just 16,000 products ranging from the Sony Network Walkman NW-E005 to the Zanussi ZWF1421 Front Loading Washing Machine the range is still small compared with the 350,000 goods available at its largest stores. However John Lewis reckons it will carry on out stripping its other stores’ sales growth as it stocks a wider range.
