Just Cause allows you to get down and dirty with guerrilla warfare, working in the guise of undercover CIA agent Rico Rodriguez to topple the dictator of San Espirito, a fictional South American island.
You get to zoom around jungles, mountains and cities in an astonishing array of land, air and water-borne vehicles, and play off rival factions against one another in 21 storyline-based missions and over 300 optional side missions.
The main character’s vast repertoire of stunts is a special feature of Just Cause, but its most amazing aspect is the game world. ‘Procedural synthesis’ lets the game generate terrain as it goes along, rather than working from a pre-designed plan, allowing seamless gameplay across a continuous map of 32sq km.
Detailed landscape truly stretches out into the horizon, without interruption from loading screens or any delay in passing between locations; it has to be seen to be believed.
The game is entirely free-roaming, with a sandbox structure that lets you go anywhere and do anything. Just Cause heralds the start of a brave new world of gaming potential.
