TEXT4PRICE SHOPTALK

If you think the PlayStation 3 is only going to be about games then think again.

by editor@text4price.com @ 20 July 2006 - 19:24:17

You’ll get a Blu-Ray player on the cheap.

Thanks to a built in Blu-Ray drive; the new PlayStation 3 will be the cheapest way to watch those high definition movies from the new super-discs. When released in the UK it could be as much as £200 cheaper than a dedicated Blu-Ray player.

So if you're a HDTV nut that’s going to be a massive bonus, particularly when you know it’s capable of outputting those lovely HD images in the full fat 1080p format. Just as any self respecting media player should the PlayStation 3 is going for a noiseless solution so you can watch those movies without that annoying substation hum.

Shows off your photos and videos to your friends

Unfortunately it looks like we'll only get the top banana 60 GB version here in the UK, what a shame, and that means plenty of storage for your media files.

You can access your Hi-Def movies, photos and music via a beautiful icon menu, which if you have already got a PlayStation Portable you should find very familiar.

Naturally CDs can be ripped to the hard drive but you can also download files from the web. Media can also be copied directly from USB devices such as flash music players and digital cameras or even memory cards via the card reader on the front.

So what about online activity then?

The good news is that the PlayStation 3 will have Wi-Fi built-in, an Ethernet port as well as a full blown internet browser.

But the really exciting news is that Sony will launch the PlayStation 3 to coincide with the PlayStation Network Platform (PNP) which is an online gaming service similar to Microsoft’s Xbox live, however unlike Xbox live, you'll be able to play games online for free, that’s right no subscription malarkey.

But you will though have to pay for some of the services, such as downloadable games and music, so it’s going to cost you if you like listening to Feeder whilst playing Gran Turismo 5 with your mates but hey it’s a step in the right direction in our book.

For great prices from Merchants with stock keep an eye on Text4price when the PlayStation 3 is launched in the near future. Alternatively don't buy instore till you have checked online with 'Find PS3' to 84070.
