Exercise while playing with Wii Sports

by editor@text4price.com @ 12:36:17 - 11 December 2006

Exercise while playing video games

32454848Who says we are a fat nation because we spend too much time in front of the TV not exercising? With wii sports you can now enjoy video games and exercise at the same time!

‘Wii sports’ includes tennis, golf, bowling and boxing.

The games are really easy to get the hang on and the wii remote makes it fun and energetic.

The games are multiplayers, and tennis with four people is great fun, especially as you try not to hit your mates with flailing arms. Boxing is a great idea, and uses two controllers allowing you to throw punches with both arms. A great way to release the tension after a stressful day at work!

These will give you quite a work out so be prepared to sweat. Who says exercising is no fun?

Wii’s a winner

by Santa @ 17:56:48 - 08 December 2006

With the controls firmly set on fun.

32454848Nintendo’s new Wii, launched today, is already on course to be this Christmas’s must have present – possibly due to Sony delaying the European launch of its new Playstation 3 until March next year.

Already the Wii console has sold out across Britain with shoppers pre-ordering Nintendo’s entire initial allocation online.

So what is so good about it, well the first thing that hits you is how small the console is, only a little larger than a stack of four DVD cases. Setting it up is a breeze, and the instructions are clear and easy to understand.

The key to the Wii is the controller. Shaped like a TV remote, it interacts with a small sensor bar placed in front of the TV to translate your own motion to movement on screen.

It’s an incredibly intuitive way to control games, and the Wii sports game supplied with every console makes full use of it. Take Wii tennis, for example, using the controller like a racket you swing at the ball and after playing your first set of Wii tennis it’s really hard to wipe the grin from your face.

That said the graphics are not up to Xbox 360 standard, after only a few sets of tennis the cartoon-like graphics begin to take on an appeal all their own.

The console has some excellent online features like being able to download games from Nintendo’s extensive back catalogue, news updates and even weather forecasts once you’ve connected to the internet.

Cancel Christmas?

We consider Sony's announcement of its PS3 delays

After the repeated denials from Sony in recent months its ambitious plans for a near-simultaneous global launch for the console have been dashed.

The reason for this is due to a shortage of essential blue laser diodes needed in the manufacture of both Blu-ray and HD DVD players.

It’s not like we haven’t experienced such problems before but it must be a huge disappointment for Sony as much as it is for gamers and developers.

So what are the implications of today's news for the console market?

Of course it goes without saying that it's going to be a bumper Christmas for Nintendo's Wii and Microsoft's Xbox 360 again.

But look on the bright side, if you do decide resist temptation this delay should mean that more PS3 units available on launch day, which could reduce the frustration experienced with the launch of the Xbox360.

Of course the underlying problem causing the delay, the lack of Blue Laser diodes, is focusing attention on what this means for the impact of Blu-ray since the console was seen as Sony's secret weapon in the Blu-ray versus HD-DVD war as we reported in one of our earlier posts.

Ultimately though the PS3 isn't going flop simply because of this delay, just like the PS2 was snapped up by all those PSone fans those Sony diehards will still buy it. But that doesn't stop the news from being a big blow to the console community.

If you think the PlayStation 3 is only going to be about games then think again.

by editor@text4price.com @ 19:24:17 - 20 July 2006

Sony wants it to be your all-in-one, do-it-all media hub, so here is how it hooks up.

You’ll get a Blu-Ray player on the cheap.

Thanks to a built in Blu-Ray drive; the new PlayStation 3 will be the cheapest way to watch those high definition movies from the new super-discs. When released in the UK it could be as much as £200 cheaper than a dedicated Blu-Ray player.

So if you're a HDTV nut that’s going to be a massive bonus, particularly when you know it’s capable of outputting those lovely HD images in the full fat 1080p format. Just as any self respecting media player should the PlayStation 3 is going for a noiseless solution so you can watch those movies without that annoying substation hum.

Shows off your photos and videos to your friends

Unfortunately it looks like we'll only get the top banana 60 GB version here in the UK, what a shame, and that means plenty of storage for your media files.

You can access your Hi-Def movies, photos and music via a beautiful icon menu, which if you have already got a PlayStation Portable you should find very familiar.

Naturally CDs can be ripped to the hard drive but you can also download files from the web. Media can also be copied directly from USB devices such as flash music players and digital cameras or even memory cards via the card reader on the front.

So what about online activity then?

The good news is that the PlayStation 3 will have Wi-Fi built-in, an Ethernet port as well as a full blown internet browser.

But the really exciting news is that Sony will launch the PlayStation 3 to coincide with the PlayStation Network Platform (PNP) which is an online gaming service similar to Microsoft’s Xbox live, however unlike Xbox live, you'll be able to play games online for free, that’s right no subscription malarkey.

But you will though have to pay for some of the services, such as downloadable games and music, so it’s going to cost you if you like listening to Feeder whilst playing Gran Turismo 5 with your mates but hey it’s a step in the right direction in our book.

For great prices from Merchants with stock keep an eye on Text4price when the PlayStation 3 is launched in the near future. Alternatively don't buy instore till you have checked online with 'Find PS3' to 84070.

Sonys PSP a buyers guide

by editor@text4price.com @ 17:09:09 - 26 April 2006

Sony's Play Station Portable (psp). Could it be the best product of all time?

Buyer’s Guide

Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) ConsoleThe Sony Play Station Portable or psp wasn’t just the contender for best gadget of the year in 2005 - it could be a genuine contender for the best product of all time.

Put simply, the psp is the most important thing to happen in the video game industry since the launch of the original PlayStation.

Not only is it brilliant for games - being the only handheld that can deliver both the immersive experience of Metal Gear Acid and the adrenaline rush of Grand Theft Auto - but it can also play movies from UMD’s Universal Mini Discs, putting the portable world in a spin. The psp also acts as an mp3.

The psp is a triumph of design, and it looks incredible even before you switch it on. Finished in gloss black, the psp does for hand-held gaming what the iPod did for portable music players - it's desirable on an aesthetic level, rather than a purely functional one.

The fascia of the psp is dominated by the 4.3in TFT screen and we have never seen a display like this on a hand-held device before. The screen has a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio, making it ideal for watching movies as well as playing games, with a resolution of 480 x 272 and a full 24-bit colour depth.

The screen also incorporates Sony's X-Black coating, so the image is amazingly bright and vivid. The image produced by the psp display is just breathtaking,

The psp fits in your hand comfortably and both the controllers and the buttons fall under your thumbs easily. It's surprisingly light and finding the perfect viewing angle is simple, even with strong ambient light sources. There's a wrist strap among the psp accesories, and although it doesn't look particularly cool, it's worth using, just in case someone knocks it out of your hand.

If there's one problem with the psp's slick black design, it's the fact that it's a magnet for fingerprints and greasy smears. It sometimes feels like the psp just pulls fingerprints out of the atmosphere, because even after you've just wiped it clean, fingerprints will appear before you've even picked it up!

Another way to show off the screen is to transfer digital photos to your MemoryStick. The psp is great for showing slide-shows, and you can view the images in standard 4:3 ratio, with bars down the side, or you can make them fill the whole widescreen.

You don’t even need to bother with a separate mp3 player when you can simply drag and drop tunes onto cheap memory stick cards and listen to them on the psp.

The real tech heads out there are getting stuck into home brewed games and emulators (although watch out for the first psp specific viruses sneaking onto the web)

With built in WiFi for multi player gaming and web surfing, there really is very little this fantastic machine can’t do. In fact while you’re wandering around in wireless territory, we also suggest you take a quick surf and check out the increasing freebie content at www.yourpsp.com.

If only, while out and about and using the internet you could gain access to programmes from you homes TV or DVD play…..well soon, you’ll be able to! That’ll be what Sony plans with its forthcoming locationFree package.

The Sony’s tiny speaker slays its tiny rivals but, like the AV700 we still recommend an upgrade pair of headphones when you invest in accessories or psp parts.

Sony has redefined mobile gaming with the PlayStation Portable and we never imagined that the psp would be this good; this is one product that has to be seen to be believed.

Here are a few of our recommendations for psp accessories and parts

JoyTech Media AMP PSP Speaker System
You want simulated 3D sound? You got it plus a remote for flicking though the boring bits in films and dual headphone sockets

JoyTech Battery Pack

Don’t let your fun be thwarted by running low on juice. This rechargeable supplementary battery pack will double your playing time to between 7-10hrs

Why you should buy an Xbox 360

by editor@text4price.com @ 15:38:01 - 26 April 2006

The Microsoft XBOX 360 is an advanced videogame console with an internet connection and Media Centre Extender functionality. It delivers the power and performance of a top of the range gaming PC, with excellent digital media and networking features.

Microsoft Xbox 360 ConsoleThe Microsoft XBOX 360 is an advanced videogame console with an internet connection and Media Centre Extender functionality. It delivers the power and performance of a top of the range gaming PC, with excellent digital media and networking features.

Have we lost you? In that case, you’re probably not a serious gamer, the kind of person for whom the 360 was designed. But, if you want to play high definition games, digital music, DVDs and want to be able to link to a media centre PC, the XBOX 360 takes some beating.

So what does the core system offer? First of all, with a custom ATI graphics processor and 512mb of RAM running at 500MHz, all its games are in high-definition which means the graphics are stunning.

The 20gb hard drive is more than ample to store multimedia such as videos and music. Whilst the 20gb hard drive can be upgraded, it’s certainly capable of storing tons of multimedia – you could get five feature length dvd films or over 6000 downloaded songs on a 20gb machine. The XBOX 360 has a 3.2GHz processor – that’s right, three times the processing power of a decent PC.

Other features include an attractive exterior casing, a user-friendly interface, built-in support for wireless controllers, online gaming and communications via Xbox Live and you can play most of the original Xbox games on it too. The package also includes its key accessories, such as the wireless headset, which makes a pleasant change. You can buy it in silver or black both of which look great but if you’re so inclined, you can remove most of the plates from the casing and replace them with whatever colour you prefer.

The wireless remotes are great – no more broken bones as you or your mates ‘go over the wire’ and you don’t have to be so close to the console to play the games.

Does it have any downsides? Some would say that the first generation of games is less than thrilling – but they’d be fussy! The exhaust fan is a tad noisy, it has no built-in wireless networking, just the three USB ports. We could go on but we’re being picky. The fact is that the Xbox 360 provides a tough competitor to the Sony Playstation 3 and that’s got to be good news.

So, if you’re looking to buy an Xbox 360 and you need to know where it’s in stock, Text4Price can help you. Check out the best deals here.
